There is a common misconception that dartboards are made from horsehair or pig hair. This is not correct. Modern dartboards are made from sisal.
What is sisal?
Sisal is a natural fibre derived from the agave plant, a tropical plant species. Thanks to the strong and durable properties of sisal, it is highly suitable for dartboards. The fibres allow the holes made by the darts to close up, giving the board a long lifespan.
Other uses of sisal
Sisal is not only used for dartboards. It is a versatile material also used in brooms, carpeting, and rope.
Harvesting regions
The sisal fibres are mainly harvested in South America, Africa and Asia, where the climate is ideal for the agave plant.
Why sisal for dartboards?
Durable: can be hit repeatedly without wearing out quickly.
Self-healing: the fibres close up after the darts are removed.
Environmentally friendly: a natural material that is biodegradable.
